New Hope Community Church

New Hope Community Church has a strong ministry vision, and its facility provides a tool that supports that vision. As the “untypical church for typical people,” the design is clear, simple, and impactful. It is a community center where people meet, grow, and dream together.

Cambridge, Minn.-based New Hope Community Church considers itself the “untypical church for typical people,” and the goal of its new facility is to reflect that description. The church envisioned its space as a community center — a “third place,” other than home and work, that would be bustling with 24/7 activity, a place known for having open doors to the broad Isanti County community.

The new Phase One 17,200-square-foot church facility is strategically oriented inside a 21-acre site. It is visible as guests approach from the southwest.
• Features of the Phase One facility include:
• 450-seat multi-use worship space.
• State-of-the-art sound and projections systems.
• Community lobby for “third place” gathering, with café and worship overflow.
• Secure nursery for infants through 5 years of age (space also available as classroom space).
• A generous education classroom, called “The Shop,” fitted with sound and lighting systems.
• Quiet prayer room with lake views.
• Modest administration suite for a six-person shared office.
• Support spaces (full kitchen, restrooms, storage, and mechnical).
• Parking for 225 cars with associated drive aisles, sidewalks, and on-site water retention system.

The building is an efficient single story building of Type 5B construction. The lobby, classrooms, administration, and prayer rooms feature all-wood frame construction with wood trusses, with RedBuilt trusses used exclusively in the lobby, large classroom, and prayer room. The worship center is built of pre-cast and steel construction, all with painted exposed structure. The exterior finish is EIFS and pre-cast and corrugated metal.

The mechanical systems are all high-efficiency units. LED light fixtures were used in the worship center not only for the house lights, but also for the platform lighting — costs were saved via a dimming system and electric service.

Designed to accommodate future expansion, the building offers visual cues that orient guests to each program area, eliminating the guesswork in wayfinding. The church was very involved with the construction of the project — from making the colored wood slat walls at the coffee window to employing skilled professionals within the church to install doors and hardware and painting — all in an effort to reduce costs.

The backside of the site is preserved for a “Community Backyard” that will include softball, soccer, sand volleyball, Frisbee golf, picnic shelters, an amphitheater, and corn field (they sell the crop and donate the money to a local food shelf).
