2014 Solomon Awards

The Worship Facilities Solomon Awards recognizes churches and their partners for excellence in facilities design, building expansion or remodeling, operation excellence, innovative use, and technical production.

Winners were announced on October 1, 2014.

Bryan Bailey - Technical Direction First Baptist Church Dallas
Bryan Bailey serves as the director of media and production at First Baptist Church of Dallas. Not only is Bryan skilled in the technical arts, but he is also a great builder of people. He has developed a training program and internship program that product technically adept volunteers and connects them as family.

Asbury United Methodist Church Sanctuary
Churches by Daniels has completed a sanctuary remodel for Asbury First United Methodist Church in Tulsa, OK. It teamed with AE Global Media in order to provide a complete design-build package for the entire project, including all of the construction and AVL elements.

Elevation Church - Lake Norman Campus
The construction of Elevation Church Lake Norman, marked the largest church construction project in Cornelius, NC. This 41,600-square-foot, $5 million renovation project transformed a former cineplex, into a state-of-the-art worship center. The vibrant and colorful design re-energizes this previously underutilized facility, transforming it into a community space that will engage the community.

Elizabeth Cramer Chapel at Arborlawn United Methodist Church
Elizabeth Cramer Chapel Addition at Arborlawn United Methodist Church is shaped like an Ark, with technically challenging radiused walls and ceiling. The vaulted ceiling provides an airy feel, while the stained glass windows and woodwork lend interest and warmth.

First United Methodist Church Dallas
The First United Methodist Church Dallas project includes a 16,000-square-foot renovation and a 12,800-square-foot addition connected by a sky bridge. The renovation features a two-story glass entry and a multipurpose room. The addition encloses the existing structure built in 1925 making the aged exterior the new space’s interior.

Friendship Baptist Church - Expansion
Friendship Baptist Church’s 56,000-square-foot expansion includes a 1,200-seat auditorium, spacious gathering areas, cafe, classrooms for children and adult classes, a two-story indoor play area and more. This expansion more than doubled the size of the existing facility, giving the church some much needed elbow room.

The Restoration of Oasis Church
Due to continued growth, LA-based Oasis Church moved out of the old theater it had been using and purchased the 1926-era Wilshire Christian Church. The historic nature of the building provided the opportunity to restore an aging facility. The goal was to bring a vibrant congregation through its doors and bring worship and glory to God.

First United Methodist Church McKinney - Student Ministry Building
Located in the historic downtown district of McKinney, Texas this church seeks to create a new Student Ministry building to better reach a younger generation and serve their community. The challenge became developing a modern design for students that connects with the heritage and architectural styling of a 150-plus-year-old church.

Crossroads Community Church - Repurposed Facility
Crossroads Church in Parker, CO is a masterful repurposing of an abandoned automobile dealership. Converting high-ceiling service bays into a soaring worship center along with the large former car showroom as the welcome center made this transformation eye catching and practical all the while in the heart of an established community. The church has grown from 800 to 2,300 in two and a half years.

Mission Hills Church - Children’s Area
Build it and they will come. This original Mission Hill’s children’s wing was maxed out within a year and a half with 534 children up from 197. This new design added 29,000 square feet to the children’s area, and the existing spaces were repurposed. They currently average 813 children each Sunday. The church has grown from 1,250 to 4,143.

Grace Avenue United Methodist Church - Master Plan
A well thought-out master plan for Grace Avenue United Methodist Church is the guiding beacon for the latest of three new buildings. The Arts and Crafts style traditional sanctuary hosts a soaring exposed wood deck ceiling supported by stone columns, woven copper wall sconces and custom chandeliers.

North Madison Christian Church
North Madison Christian Church describes itself as a different type of church. So, when they came to realize their space wasn’t matching their message, they turned to Mankin Media Systems for some help. North Madison’s location was outdated and needed a complete overhaul. They wanted to design a space that was inviting, modern and created a unique ambiance while theatrical in nature. North Madison wanted to receive new systems, audio video and lighting.

Northplace Church - Master Plan
Northplace Church’s Phase I, was a significant step forward in meeting the growing congregation’s needs. Northplace partnered with Lee Architects and Goff Companies to produce a 52,000-square-foot new project. It features a state-of-the-art 1,400-seat worship center, a children’s area and a spacious commons area with 22 foot-high water feature.

Appleton Alliance Church - Expansion
In 2013 Progressive AE celebrated with Appleton Alliance Church and Boldt Construction the major expansion and renovation of its existing ministry campus. The project was 120,000 square feet, with a total project cost of $24 million including renovations, facility expansion and site development. A highlight of the expansion is how the central cafe and Hub links the new 1,800-seat main worship venue to all other ministry spaces.

First Baptist Church Temple - Master Plan: Phase 1
Working closely with church leadership and staff, Shanks Architects created a master plan and designed the first phase of First Baptist Church of Temple’s new location. The result is a new, fresh look and more expected growth for this historic church in central Texas.

Midland Bible Church - Campus Relocation
Midland Bible Church’s vision and values of “a family of faith lived out in the world,” were captured in subtle yet powerful ways in its new campus designed by the Beck Group. Through simple forms, natural materials, light, transparency and creative functionality the design enhances and communicates the church’s identity.

North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship - Campus Relocation
Family-focused North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship Church turned to HH Architects to establish a multi-phased approach for designing and building its campus. The first phase was focused on the needs of their families and community, with a dynamic family ministry space and a multi-purpose worship venue and gathering space.

Elevation Church - Lake Norman Campus
Elevation Church and LS3P took on an adaptive reuse project that transformed a derelict movie theater into a thriving worship center. A state-of-the-art auditorium accommodates 1,200 worshippers and offers an expansive new performance venue to the community.

Chapel Hill United Methodist Church - Expansion
Having more than doubled its membership in 10 years, Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas decided it was time to expand its building. Partnering with Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey Architecture and Sauder Worship Seating, Chapel Hill completed a 29,000-square-foot addition that accommodates the needs of its growing congregation.

Chase Oaks Church - Legacy Campus Worship Space Expansion
Chase Oaks Church expanded an existing 1,200-seat worship center with 800 seats and new commons. The worship space features new terraced seating, creating a worship experience that is more intimate despite being larger. The area beneath the seating is employed as a naturally lit commons, visible from the exterior.

Fair Park Baptist Church - New Addition
The Fair Park Baptist Church project in West Monroe, La. presented the unique challenge of designing a modern, 32,000-square-foot addition while maintaining the traditional southern charm of the existing campus. The new facility features a magnificent atrium gathering space that will encourage social engagement as well as a 1,000-seat sanctuary with cutting-edge, performing arts design.

Grace Avenue United Methodist Church - Phase 3 Worship Center

First United Methodist Church McKinney- New Building
First United Methodist Church in Bartlesville purchased 64 acres to replace a downtown location. Ambler Architects designed a facility to resonate with the aging congregation and speak to young families by using traditional forms in fresh ways. Attendance went from 350 to 500 and the Church is growing every month.
